American children are rated among the most overweight and physically unfit. Certainly, the availability of fast food is a contributing factor, as is improper dietary leadership from parents and others. And recent cutbacks in funding have eliminated some of our athletic programs, which certainly doesn't help either. Endocrine abnormalities and other medical conditions as well as emotional disorders like depression also can play a role.
Another generally overlooked cause of weight gain is physical restrictions, because children with these problems generally don't want to be physically active. Yet children are not routinely examined for these issues.
One of the most common problems children have is a flattening or rolling in of their feet (pronation). When severe, this can cause great fatigue and make it very difficult for them to run or do sports very well. It's as if their bodies are telling their minds, "I don't like doing this."
